So you’re in the home stretch of your pregnancy and your bump has suddenly become a little obtrusive. No matter what you do, it just always seems to get in the way. The worst part of it all though is the lower back pain that comes with this blooming belly.
Dr Tarnia Raad, a Chiropractor from Bay Life Clinic, has spent many years treating moms through their various stages of pregnancy. Being pregnant herself now, Dr Raad is the one receiving the treatments and finding ways to remain as pain-free as possible. In this clip, we learn her tried and tested methods of safe drug-free pain relief in pregnancy.
There are two things that pregnant mothers, especially those in their third trimester, should be doing to relieve back pain. Firstly regular chiropractic adjustments and secondly belly belt taping.
Chiropractic adjustments are not only safe during pregnancies but a must vital to help manage pain in your back, hips and joints. Adjustments can also help establish a pelvic balance that can provide your baby with as much space as possible over the course of your pregnancy.
Dr Raad’s, second safe, drug-free method of pain-relief is what we’ll be focusing on in this blog, belly belt taping.
Kinesiology tape, strategically applied to the abdomen, can provide a huge amount of relief as it, which provides support and stability to muscles and joints. It is especially helpful in relieving round ligament pain, that sharp jab in the lower abdomen or groin. This is a self-help remedy, which only requires a helpful partner, kinesiology tape and scissors.
Step 1: Measure the length you need by running the tape from your bra strap, around the bottom of your abdomen and back around to the other bra strap.
Step 2: Cut the tape at the measured points and make sure that the edges are rounded off. This means that the sharp edges will not hook on your clothing and the tape will stay on for longer. The tape is effective for up to three days.
Step 3: Break the tape in the centre, peel back the edges and apply it to the centre of your abdomen, which will be in line with your belly button. Apply to underneath your abdomen to where you can feel a slight lift. Stretch the tape 30-40% from applying it till the last 10cm. There must be no stretch in these last 10cm in order for it to tape to stay secured.
There is no need for you to suffer through your last few months of pregnancy. Visit your local chiropractor for your adjustments and tape your belly to go back to enjoying your pregnancy.
