Psychologists

Psychologists can help people learn how to better cope with stressful situations, overcome addictions, manage chronic illnesses, and conduct tests and assessments that can help diagnose a condition or tell one more about the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves. We have Clinical Psychologists in both Walmer and Lorraine. All of our Educational Psychologists are in Walmer.

Types of Psychology

Clinical

Clinical Psychology is the integration of science, theory, and clinical knowledge to prevent, and relieve psychologically-based distress or dysfunction to promote overall well-being and personal development. Prof Louise Stroud and Dr Ruth Stewart are our Clinical Psychologists in Walmer. Sarita Brand is our Lorriane Clinical Psychologist.


Educational

Educational psychology involves the study of how people learn, including teaching methods, instructional processes, and individual differences in learning. It involves not just the learning process of early childhood and adolescence but includes the social, emotional, and cognitive processes that are involved in learning throughout life.

Prof Louise Stroud

Clinical Psychologist - Walmer

Prof Louise Stroud (BCur, Hon (Psych), MA (Cl.Psych), PhD) is a registered Clinical Psychologist. She has practiced in the field of Psychology for 26 years and has a keen interest in Child Development, Psychotherapy and Neuropsychology. Louise is the lead researcher for the Association for Research in Infant and Child Development and a Tutor of the Griffiths Scales of Child Development.

Dr Ruth Stewart

Doctor of Chiropractic

Dr Ruth Stewart has more than 20 years of practical experience as a Clinical Psychologist. She's licensed with the HPCSA and had worked extensively in hospital and university settings while maintaining a private practice. Ruth has a special interest in education, research, advocacy and working therapeutic with individuals, couples and families. Taking a humanistic stance, her focus is on wellness and balance; accepting that life is challenging, and assisting clients to navigate difficulties. She offers support through the process of improving mental health, addressing relationship difficulties, and adjusting to challenging life changes. With each client working on strategies that address the root causes of difficulties and build meaningful connections, to be the best you can be. Over many years she has served as board member of the following organisations & NPO's : Protective Behaviours SA, Alzheimer's Council EC, Connect Centre and Greencycle. And affiliate of local and international EFT.

Sarita Brand

Clinical Psychologist - Lorraine

Sarita Brand completed her Masters of Psychology at Nelson Mandela University and is registered with the HPCSA as a Clinical Psychologist. She has a particular interest in health and wellness for individuals struggling to cope with chronic conditions and physical disabilities, post hospitalisation and Covid-19 recoveries, traumatic experiences, addiction, grief, and psychopathology. She practices holistically using various modalities, including humanistic and cognitive therapy, with a special interest in BWRT (Brain Working Recursive Therapy). She has experience in both physical/neurological rehabilitation, psychiatric and child/adolescent facilities. Sarita is part of the PAINSA society, as well as the BWRT society.

Cecil Wood

Educational Psychologist - Walmer

Dr Cecil Wood is a graduate of the University of South Africa (UNISA) and completed his Master of Education (Guidance and Counselling) degree in 2012. He is registered with the HPCSA as a psychologist in the category: independent practice educational psychology. Cecil started out his professional life as an intermediate phase teacher and then worked in the child and youth care field for more than twenty years, first as a principal of a children’s home and then as a national trainer/facilitator in this field. As an educational psychologist, he specializes in assessments and therapeutic work with children, adolescents and their families.

Area of psychological services include: Educational Assessments to determine barriers to learning, Career Assessments (Subject choices for grades 10-12 and for suitable courses to follow at tertiary education level), School Readiness Testing, Testing for Dyslexia, ADHD Testing and Parental Guidance.

Cecil also offers individual and group counselling to adults who have survived traumatic events or are struggling with issues in their lives. He has a particular interest in couples counselling and in this regard is passionate about helping couples to communicate more effectively with each other and to understand and meet each other’s emotional needs.

Gerhard Goosen

Educational Psychologist - Walmer

Gerhard Goosen is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Educational Psychologist and as a Medicolegal Practitioner with the South African Medicolegal Association (SAMLA).

Area of psychological services include: Educational Assessments to determine barriers to learning, Career Assessments (Subject choices for grades 10-12 and for suitable courses to follow at tertiary education level), School Readiness Testing, Testing for Dyslexia, ADHD Testing and Parental Guidance.

His services include custody assessments, parenting plans, personal Injury and Road Accident Fund assessments, curatorship assessments, assessment of developmental and learning difficulties, study and vocational guidance, childhood emotional, psychological, and behavioural difficulties, and psychotherapy with adults, adolescents, and children.
